Holistic Reference - Alexander Technique

by Christina Mitchell CIBTEC, ITEC

Clients are guided through a series of movement exercises to teach awareness of the body. The goal is to break through the unconscious habits of poor posture and movement to find more efficient ways to move. Clients often report increased feelings of well-being and overall improvement in physical, emotional, and mental health.

My top tips for correct sitting position:
  • 1. Your feet are supported on the floor
  • 2. Your knees are bent at a 90 degree angle
  • 3. Your hips are at the same height or slightly higher than your knees
  • 4. Your back is fully supported, especially in the hollow curve
  • 5. You sit far back into your seat
  • 6. Your head and shoulders are in line with your hips
  • 7. Your abdominal muscles are contracted
What to look for in an office chair:
  • 1. You should be able to adjust its height to suit your height as well as the level of the desk
  • 2. It should swivel, so that you do not have to twist your body when turning
  • 3. It must support the hollow part of your lower back
  • 4. It must have armrests that are as high as your elbows, when your arms are bent at 90 degrees
  • 5. It must be the right height for the surface at which you are sitting
  • 6. It should also have a soft but firm cushion
