by Christina Mitchell CIBTEC, ITEC

Prevention is better than cure!

  • Keep well wrapped up and wear warm clothes.
  • The food you eat is one of the best lines of defence against catching a cold.
  • Thyme and Tea Tree Essential Oil - These oils are very useful to both boost the immune system and are antiviral and antibacterial. (If you are pregnant, have eplisey or have high blood pressure don't use Thyme)
  • Boost your immune system.

Once caught there is no effective "cure" of the common cold but there are things you make it more bearable.

  • Zinc can help to shorten the duration of a cold.
  • Taking time off at the onset of a cold will help shorten its duration.
  • Echinacea - Not for every day use. Only take it when you feel a cold comming on.
  • Garlic - This acts as a natural decongestant.
  • Ginger tea - Use a couple of tablespoons of fresh, shredded ginger. Its a good antiseptic herb.
  • Citrus fruits and vitamin C- Approx 80mg daily but double if your a smoker.
  • Eat a balanced diet.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil - Great for coughs and infections and also useful for fevers. Use about 5 drops in a burner or add the oil to a bowl of hot water and put a towel over your head and inhale for a few minutes a time. Another method is you could add a few drops to some sunflower oil and rub on your chest.

Don't forget to drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
