Take a walk down the cleaning products aile of your local supermarket and your bound to be spoilt for choice by the numerous products available for a fresh smelling home. But are these products safe to use regularly? I've found that most of these mask the smell, are stifling and the effects are short lived. Lots of these products contain harmful ingredients that can aggravate asthma and affect reproductive development.
They contain phthalates or hormone disrupting chemicals that can be particularly harmful to young children. Lots of the products available don't even list these chemicals. As a holistic therapist I'm all for a alternative option.
When I was studying aromatherapy I learnt that cypress essential oil was a deodorizer but I never used it for this purpose until one day I had it in a burner in my living room. After a while I wandered off and then came back into the room and was blown away by just how powerful this wonderful oil was. It's scent isn't as overpowering as some other essential oils, I find it actually quiet mild. But immedially I noticed how fresh and clean smelling the room was. I didn't feel or notice any smells in my home but this oil really cleared out the room and got rid of ALL residual smells from food and general daily living.
I can't stress how exceptional using cypress oil is compared to other products on the market and it's completely natural with the added benefits of being a insect repellent, antiseptic, antibacterial and more. I've had guests come over and they have commented and how fresh my home smells. All you need is a oil burner, water and just a few drops and away you go.
One last tip:
Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking soda) can be used as a deodorizer. It absorbs odors and moisture quickly. A good tip is if you have cats that use a litter tray. Sprinkle this over the litter so the next time your pet uses the box its works straight away.
