Using Holistics To Fight Depression

by Christina Mitchell CIBTEC, ITEC

This condition can affect anyone. There are plenty of holistic approaches you can take to help but if your symptoms persist please talk to your doctor.

  • Be sure to get regular day light.
  • Talk to your friends or family or even to Aware (Ireland only).
  • Make sure you have a regular sleep pattern. Go to bed at the same time every night, even on the weekends.
  • Resist the urge to sleep in, in the mornings. Your not doing yourself any favours.
  • Set goals for yourself.
  • Talk up a new hobby or interest like an art class.
  • St. John's wort is a herbgreat for treating anxiety or depression and it also improves sleep quality.
  • Ginger is another herb with great antidepressant properties.
  • Take time to do something nice for yourself like having a relaxing aromatherapy massage. This can do wonders to re energise you and lift your spirits.
  • If you wanted to use some oils yourself, i'd recommend a bath with three drops each of the following essential oils; Bergamot, Lavender and Frankincense.
  • Be aware of the food your eating. Its easy to slip into bad habits and eat all the wrong things.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine in tea, coffee and fizzy drinks.
  • Saffron, although its an expensive spice is said to ease depression.
  • Depression can lower your bodies resistance leaving you prone to getting sick with aliments like colds or flu. So don't forget to eat plenty of fresh fruit and veg.
  • Try not to skip meals. Been hungry will make you feel sluggish and possible more depressed.

Last of all. Exercise for at least 30minutes a day. Even a light walk during your lunch break or in the evening will help to boost your spirits. Why not drag your partner off that couch and get them to join you.
